Chinese name generator

Create your Chinese name

Choose a new name for everyday use. This is different from writing your original name in Chinese, such as Tom → 汤姆.

We only connect the new name to your original name if you ask us to in question 5.

This describes the name’s feel, not your gender.

Choose at least one.

4Which styles do you like? *

5Should the name connect to anything? (optional)

How it works

  1. 1Choose the name’s feel and how you’ll use it.
  2. 2Compare three different names and their reasons.
  3. 3Hear a favorite, copy it, or try another set.

What makes a Chinese name

A Chinese name puts the surname first and the given name second — 李明 is surname 李 (Li) plus given name 明 (Ming). Given names are usually one or two characters, each chosen for its meaning and sound, which is why a good suggestion takes more thought than a letter-by-letter transliteration.

That is also why this generator does not add a surname unless you ask for one in question 2: you can request a full name with a surname, offer a Chinese surname you already like, or keep the suggestions surname-free.

One honest limit: these suggestions are for everyday use. Official documents such as passports and visas follow legal identity names, and a generated name does not change yours.

What your answers shape

  • 1. The feeling

Guides the overall tone of the characters chosen — softer, stronger, or neutral. It describes the name’s feel, not your gender.

  • 2. Name structure

Decides what the suggestions contain: a given name only, a full Chinese name with a surname (including one you already like), or your original surname rendered in Chinese plus a new given name.

  • 3. Use cases

Where you plan to use the name — social life, work, study, gaming and more — shapes how formal or playful the suggestions can be.

  • 4. Styles

Pick 1–3 styles such as modern or literary, and the suggestions lean that way.

  • 5. Connections (optional)

A few keywords or a link to your original name. Only used if you ask for it — the generator never assumes you want your old name echoed.

Chinese name generator FAQ

Is this the same as translating my name?

No. Translating an English name into Chinese (such as Tom → 汤姆) follows the sound of your existing name and uses established translations. This generator instead suggests new names shaped by your preferences. If you want the translation, use the translator on the homepage.

Can I use a generated name on official documents?

No. The suggestions are for everyday, informal use — introductions, social media, study or travel. They are not legal identity names, and passports, visas and official forms must follow the relevant authority’s rules for legal names.

Will my answers or suggested names be published anywhere?

No. Your results are shown only in this browser session and are never published as public or searchable pages. Your answers are sent to the name generation service to produce the suggestions, so share only what you are comfortable sending.

Does the generator give me a Chinese surname?

Only if you ask for one. In question 2 you can choose a given name only, or a full name with a surname — including a surname you already like. If you do not ask, the suggestions stay surname-free so you can pair them with any surname later.

About these suggestions

Each result is an AI suggestion shaped by your answers — a starting point, not a guarantee of a culturally perfect name. Read the pronunciation and explanation, and ask a Chinese speaker if you plan to use a name widely.

Your results are shown in this browser session and are not published as searchable pages. Your answers are sent to the name generation service; avoid details you do not want to share.
